Future by Daghrgenzeen

A fast-paced cinquain, which explores
the insecurity of one's future. Stunning
with a word choice which reflects the theme perfectly.

SalatShe rotates gracefully.
Today, she practices prayer behind the pillars
near the stairwell of the student commons.
Yesterday she could be seen in A building
by the rec room quiet and alone; content.
Monday I saw her situated near C building,
where I assume she has been studying art.
She rotates.
She rotates because it is salat; Muslim prayer.
When she prays her hijab falls over her face
in small folds, silent folds, worrying folds.
I’ve never seen her hair do the same.
But I push my bangs out of my eyesight,
cursing their constant presence and yet
adapt to my poorly-cut lengthy male strands
and pilgrim on by the makeshift masjid
in the student commons at the college.
I’ve never seen her.
I’ve never seen her rotate gracefully for me,
like an American woman would for a man:
“How does this look? Do you like it?”
She is not seeking validation; rather,
she rotates for herself so she doesn’t
hear the grin of the atypical American male:

that our differences don't have to divide us.
Nichrysalis drives that message home
with potent imagery in this poem about
his observations of a Muslim woman.

CaptivesThey use zip ties now, the cops. This is different from the last time I was cuffed. I was expecting the cold metal bite of a cuff always a little too tight. These were worse, tighter, and the thin plastic pinched and felt like ligature wire against the bone.
They read me my rights, too. The woman cop, a head shorter than me with dull hair pulling the skin of her face tight against her skull. Her eyes looked dead, sunken. Shadowed by the shiny brim of her smart little hat.
She gripped my arm like I was trying to get away. My flight was over, if it had ever begun. What did I have to run from?
“Get in the car, Ma’am,” she said. “Watch your head.” Her hand shoved my head roughly under the  doorway. I felt tears, but I refused to give her the satisfaction.
“You have one phone call, Ma’am,” they said when we got to the station. “Do you have anyone to call before we book you in?”
I took it. I called the only person I needed to t

The Spaces Between Their MovesA small boat approached the barren, rocky island.  The blackened and soggy remnants of other vessels stretched across the jagged stones like ladies on fainting couches, but spoke of peril as much as exhaustion.  The waves grew choppy near the shore and the boat tossed, but one of the occupants expertly angled the tiller, guiding the single-sail craft safely to a tiny beach.  Other boats were here as well, dragged up onto the sand but long since claimed by time and storm, no longer hoping their masters might return to sail once more.
"Are you certain?" asked the pilot, hand still on the tiller.  "There is no shame in turning about, I would speak of it to no one."
"I must," said the warrior calmly.  "I took a vow, never to cast aside a worthy quest."  The sailor bowed his head sadly.
"Then I will return, once only, in three days as we agreed.  I hope to find you waiting here victorious, but I fear we shall not speak again.  I cannot see how

The Imbalance of Dreams (Deutsch) by Aurora66

A romantic short story between
a female future architect and a male
artist who lives in ruins and has no
security but lives his dreams.
Interesting piece to read.
